Instead of allowing our minds to wander negatively, we can intentionally cultivate positive thoughts (e.g., gratitude). Research in positive psychology shows that gratitude training rewires the neurons in our brains to help us stay positive, healthy, and happy.
We have the tendency to remember our faults more quickly; they’re like Velcro straps – very sticky. Happy memories require more effort in recalling them; they’re like Teflon pan, which is non-stick. Therefore, we should schedule time for daily Gratitude Workout.
This is one of the ways that healthcare professionals can cultivate gratitude:
1. Randomly choose a card from the series of gratitude cards (see below).
2. Try to recall something that has happened today or recently that matches the description on the card.
3. Rejoice on the happy memories. You may also share the memorable stories with a friend to multiply the joy.
